220 must-be-mastered sight words are divided into 5 levels - 5 colors for each level for different grades:
Level 1 - 40 RED cards for Pre-primer;
Level 2 - 52 YELLOW cards for primer;
Level 3 - 41 GREEN cards for 1st grader;
Level 4 - 46 BLUE cards for 2nd grader;
Level 5 - 41 PURPLE cards for 3rd grader;
These words comprise 80% of the words you would find in a typical children’s book and 50% of the words found in writing for adults. Once a child knows this list of words, it makes reading much easier, because the child can then focus his or her attention on the remaining words.
While getting familiar with these sight words, kids could use wooden letters or letter blocks to match words, learn and practice spelling, thus enhance memory of words' spelling.
